Founder & Trainer
Born and raised in Marion, North Carolina, Raekwon Miller is a McDowell High School graduate, former Division 1 basketball player, professional overseas player, and now a basketball trainer and mentor dedicated to developing the next generation through the game he loves.
During his high school career at McDowell, Miller established himself as one of the most accomplished players in school history. He was one of just 13 players selected to the North Carolina Associated Press All-State, tied scoring record with 42 points. He later broke that record with 43 points before ultimately breaking his own record again with 48 points in his final Home Game. He holds the school record for the most 40-point games and led Western North Carolina in scoring as a senior while earning All-Conference honors.
His high school career also included a selection to the Blue-White All-Star game, where he earned MVP honors, as well as an East-West All-Star selection. In recognition of his accomplishments, Miller was inducted into the McDowell High School Hall of Fame.
Miller continued his playing career at University of North Carolina at Asheville, where he played four years of Division 1 basketball. Beginning his career as a walk-on and eventually earning a scholarship, his class holds the record for most wins in Program History. During his time at UNC Asheville, he helped the Bulldogs win three consecutive Big South Championships earning opportunities to play in both the NCAA tournament and NIT tournament.
As a senior, Miller finished among the nation's top 20 players in three-point percentage, shooting 47.2% from beyond the arc.
Following college, Miller continued his basketball career professionally overseas playing in Germany, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. Those experiences gave him the opportunity to compete at different levels, learn from different basketball cultures, and continue developing his understanding of the game.
Today, Miller uses everything he has learned throughout his playing career to instruct, mentor, and develop young athletes. His philosophy goes beyond simply teaching players how to score, dribble, or shoot. He believes basketball should help young people develop confidence, discipline, decision-making, accountability, character, and the ability to think independently.
At Iron Sharpens Iron, the goal is to create an advantage- on the court and in life. Players are challenged to understand the game, anticipate what happens next, adapt to different situations, and become more complete basketball players while developing qualities that will serve them long after their playing days are over.
Through a partnership with the YMCA, Miller continues working to bring that vision to more athletes and families, sharing a commitment to developing well-rounded individuals both on and off the court.
